We looked into using larger maps we already owned for areas along the JMT, like a Yosemite map and a Kings Canyon/Sequoia map, but the weight of this approach ended up weighing more than the maps in this pack. We also found we preferred pulling out a small map vs. folding and unfolding the big maps while on the trail.

Backpacked this trail 8/8 to 8/12. We took the shadow creek trail up to Ediza Lake day 1, then came back to the JMT and up to Thousand Island. Trail conditions were great, a few short snow crossings but no need for micro spikes. We had 6 kids with us ranging in age from 6yrs - 12yrs and everyone did great in tennis shoes. The Pacific Crest Trail junction at Cottonwood Pass gives the option to go to the southeastern portion of Sequoia National Park.
