Lately I've had a hard time finding a good scary book to read. I read all of Stephen King (Salem's Lot) and Dean Koontz (Phantoms) books. Peter Straub (Ghost), Dan Simmons (Summer of Night) they're okay but not some of my favorite. I decided to give other horror authors a chance and found a few I actually enjoyed.

The Book of Air and Shadows and the Forgery of Venus by Michael Gruber. For mysteries P.D. James wrote good, well written mysteries with a serious literary feel. I think Dorothy Sayers Peter Wimsey mysteries are well written. Elizabeth George and Deborah Crombie also do well-written mysteries.Some of my favorite authors in this genre are Patrick O'Brian, Bernard Cornwell, and Colleen McCullough. I also love Larry McMurtry and Dan Simmons, but their works are probably somewhat over-fictionalized. I am quite often drawn to Historical Fiction. Comedy/satire, and philosophical novels.

Dune by Frank Herbert is probably my favorite sci-fi book. Red Rising by Pierce Brown is my favorite sci-fi series. The Red Rising series is great. So many unexpected events. A bit like GOT in that way. I feel like it would make an incredible TV show. It would also need an absurdly high budget though.The only Forgotten Realms books I've read that pass for "normal" fantasy is the Brimstone Angels series by Erin M. Evans, and maybe the Dark Elf trilogy (but I assume you've read that one).. In the Brimstone Angels you don't really see all the D&D in it, no game mechanics bouncing around in the background. I have physical copies of some of the books from each series but i got them all on ebook. John Flanagan is a beast and even his brotherband chronicles are insane. As for Artemis Fowl yeah i love the books so much. I actually did a post in the Artemis fowl sub Reddit talking about every thing they changed and how absolutely crappy the movie was.The Princess Bride, Howl's Moving Castle and Hitchhiker's Guide are awesome feel-good books. I also like reading the Stephanie Plum series for some light reading. The last of the hitchhikers books by adams depressed me. I have a weakness for the Shopaholic series.
